Nyarlathotep - the Crawling Chaos - one of H.P. Lovecraft's "Outer Gods" with an Egyptian flair! No - he's not exactly in this painting (he's too.....unknowable....), but his priestess is! I grew up on Lovecraft (no surprise - my father went to Miskatonic University after all) and like many artists, poets & authors, my own work occasionally reflects his mythos. All sorts of fun & creepy stuff is happening in this piece, composite mummies, droning locusts, skulls - she holds the skull of an Ibis, and other Egyptian animal skulls appear in this work (crocodiles, jackal, even a hippopotamus). If you look at the hieroglyphs on the wall behind her you my recognize the god Anubis.... and another one of the great Old Ones.... The pharaoh looking dudes are my interpretation of the two blind amorphous idiot flute-players. I had way too much fun with this painting, thank you for indulging me!
